On July 1, I initiated my third “12 Week Year” of 2018. The 12 Week Year is a book written by Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington. My friend and colleague, Rick Arthur, brought my attention to the concept through one of his book club gatherings last summer, and he also wrote a great summary of the book on his own blog.
Changing how you view and execute your goals within this compressed timeframe allows you to achieve your BHAGs (Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals) and is the basis of this concept of “periodization”, which was introduced to me through the book.
I dabbled in practicing the 12-week year in late 2017, but it wasn’t until this year that I was able to get some serious traction. (Side note, the book Traction by Gino Wickman was also a huge contributor to my ability to solidify my 12-week year process, through 90-day “rocks”.)
My first two 12-week periods of 2018 brought about some amazing results for me and my company, 5280 Accelerator. With the help of my coach, and some clear, actionable goals, I’ve been able to transform how I work with my team, got clear about my processes for working with clients, and have freed up time to create a brand new program that will help other business owners do the same. This program is called the 90-Day Agile Accelerator.
The “agile” part is similar to the concept of agile software development. It’s a time-boxed, iterative approach that builds on your goals incrementally instead of trying to deliver them all at once at the end of the year. It works in goal setting just as it does in software development. Projects and tasks are broken down into small bits or “sprints” where actions are defined in daily and weekly chunks over a 90-day period. Once a sprint is completed it is evaluated, lessons are learned, and the next sprint starts. Brilliant.
The process is actually very similar to how we approach building a strategic marketing plan. We start with setting your Vision and Mission statements. This is truly the pivotal starting point where business owners get clear about why they’re even in business and what they’d like their future to look like. It’s basically seeing your amazing future and then writing the script to get there. We take it to the next level in the program by working with people to tap into a “feeling state” where that vision gets so incredibly exciting that they just can’t wait to get up every morning and make it all happen!
Then objectives and goals are created, timelines are established, and the real magic begins to unfold. The best part of our program is that you have an accountability partner, working with you one-on-one to help craft your vision, mission, objectives, and goals, and then keep you accountable throughout the 90 days. You’re never alone in the process, and it’s a fast one, so I always tell people at the beginning of the process to buckle up! Most are shocked by how fast they’re able to plow through goals that once took them months to create.
Whether you’re starting a new company, trying to grow your revenue, expanding your product offering, or creating a new program, there’s magic that can take place in 90 days. Goals that might normally have taken you 6 or 8 months, or even a year to create, are completed in 12 short weeks.
What normally gets in the way of your achieving your business and personal goals? Maybe one of these things resonates with you:
- Procrastination
- Being unmotivated or uninspired
- Not being able to hold yourself accountable
- Shiny object syndrome
- No purpose behind your plan
- You’re just plain stuck
Whatever it is, you’re not alone. This program was developed with the intent of breaking through these patterns so you can get out of living in the past, get out of old habits and patterns, forge a new life for yourself, and new opportunities for your business.
